Hi there! I’m Samantha Ashby and I want to be your SGA President.
About Me
My name is Samantha Ashby and I am a Junior studying Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Operations Research. I am local from Orlando Florida where my parents are both High School employees, and my twin sister is a recent grad of Political Science at Florida State University. I have two lovely dogs named Lassie and Mojito that I love to the moon in back. Previously before coming to Florida Poly, I had previous experience working in politics by campaigning and getting people to sign petitions which gave me a vast amount of information about the government and how the committees work. I plan on graduating Florida Poly with my Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering where I can go to work in Creative design or Imagineering and then run for Florida House of Representatives later in life.

My Platform:
2021-2022 Initiatives

Increasing Student and CAB Involvment
Want to work with the Campus Activities Board President to increase student involvement on-campus and rebuild the CAB organization. Due to COVID's decrease in involvement clubs and CAB have experienced a decrease in members and would gain fun campus experiences through rebuilding staffing.

Finishing the NEST
Working with the University and CFTI funds to finish renovating the NEST into a new space that students that reflect their priorities. Potential ideas include RGB lighting, screens for gaming, and alcohol or soda tap.

Long-Term Storage Solution
Work with the University to provide a better long-term solution for storage on campus for campus groups. By figuring out a better long-term solution we can maximize spaces like the SDC, NEST, and accommodate better access to equipment.
Current Initiatives

Snow Cones and Suggestions
Or Hot- Cocoa and Concerns are two events meant to bring together students and members of SGA in a casual atmosphere. Here they can talk about suggestions or concerns they may have while reaching populations we would possibly miss otherwise, and putting facial association to members of SGA. This year we started that with the SGA mixer but will try to do more of these next year when COVID is not as much of a concern.

"Help Us Grow" Initiative
Work with other Universities such as FIU to grow food for our student pantry from our garden. This can benefit students in growing our garden and supplying nutrients where students may be lacking. We have a new sustainability chair working on rebuilding the garden to make initiatives like this possible.

Move - Out Drive
A lot of students find unwanted leftover food items or appliances that they will not use in the future after moving out of the dormitory. This has lead to students leaving items such as mini-fridges or leftover storage or food items that they no longer have a use for in the trash room. This could provide an opportunity to collect extra donations to the school pantry to help students staying over summer or in the fall. So far we have utilized pantry collection boxes in housing and wellness to collect unwanted items. Will be working to try and have for Spring 2021 move-out.

Walk of Flames & Leadership Awards
Designate the first bridge in front of the IST across the lakes the "Walk of Fame" where the student(s) given the "Phoenix Flame" award names are carved into one of the bricks on the walkway. This would create an award given to student(s) that went above and beyond to help stroke the flames and help the University grow. We have worked toward this with the creation of new leadership awards for students with a structured committee to review applications and the process.
Experience
Fall 2018 - Current
SGA Representative
I have previously obtained the role of Freshman and Sophomore Representative in the SGA Senate. In my time in the Senate we passed a Resolution, wrote the first Statutes of Florida Poly SGA, created an audit score to help with budgets, approved budgets, write the RSO Policy, created the RSO Initiative Fund, and more.
Fall 2018 - Spring 2020
Student Organization Chair
In my role as SOC chair, I coordinated and served as a liaison for around 35 clubs and organizations. Since being in office I have held the monthly meeting, arranged position training, wrote the RSO Policy, approved a new Advisor Agreement, maintained access to the storage, created contact lists, organized paperwork, and approve and new organizations.
Fall 2019 - Current
Orientation Leader
As an Orientation Leader, I provided leadership while running through activities to provide team bonding. Throughout this role, I wanted to provide as much insight as possible by creating clubs and organizations hand out material while forming friendships and helping them connect to other students and activities.
Summer 2020 - Current
SGA Vice-President
As the current SGA Vice President got to work on the COVID planning team, planning a new leadership awards system, working on adding a sidewalk along 33 to Poly, renovations to the nest, working on all student access to the arcade, and more.
Fall 2019 - Spring 2020
Admissions Ambassador
As an admissions ambassador, I would represent the University at outside events or work in recruiting students through tours and events. I would use this position to inform students coming to the University about different clubs and organizations they would be interested in joining hoping to help our long-term involvement.
Spring 2021 - Current
SDC Worker
Have been able to experience campus athletics and events and the advantages and disadvantages of what we offer. Through my experience, I have seen where we can add enhancements for students moving forward to better what we offer and increase student moral and diverse interest inclusion.
